Psychoeducational Groups

While individual therapy is always an essential component in a mental health treatment program, the benefits of group therapies cannot be understated. The group environment allows individuals with similar diagnoses and issues to share their concerns with like-minded individuals to find support and advice on how to manage a variety of situations. When a qualified therapist leads these groups, the sessions become a productive way to learn about a particular disorder or general coping mechanisms that can be applied to a wide range of conditions.

At Avalon Integrative Wellness, we believe the road to optimal mental health must be multi-faceted. We offer a broad spectrum of treatments and therapies to address the mind, body, and spirit, even while targeting a specific psychological disorder. Psychoeducational groups, a form of group therapy, are one of the modalities we offer through our intensive outpatient program (IOP). Clients will participate in these groups while taking advantage of our other options like individual counseling, holistic healing treatments, and talk therapies.

What does Psychoeducational Groups Entail?

Psychoeducational groups are typically designed to address a specific disorder, so the participants in the group will have a similar diagnosis. The sessions are led by a therapist that serves as a “teacher” to provide information about the disorder to the group, including symptoms, treatment options, and healthy coping mechanisms. Participants can ask questions to gain clarification and will often have time to interact with other group members to form bonds with others walking a similar path.

Other psychoeducational groups might not be as targeted. Instead of focusing on one disorder, these groups might be designed to educate participants about general coping strategies or life skills that can be helpful for individuals with a variety of diagnoses. In these situations, the therapist still serves as the primary educator of the group while participants have the opportunity to contribute to the discussion or ask questions.

Benefits of Psychoeducational Groups

There are numerous potential benefits of psychoeducational groups, including:

  • Additional education about a disorder
  • Discover new coping strategies and other skills to manage the condition
  • Realize others are dealing with the same disorder and have similar struggles
  • Provides a safe place to explore issues associated with the disorder

Our team at Avalon Integrative Wellness will perform a comprehensive assessment when you begin our IOP to determine whether psychoeducational groups are a good fit for your personalized treatment plan.

What Can Psychoeducational Groups Treat?

Psychoeducational groups have proven useful for a variety of mental health disorders and other issues, such as:

  • Anxiety disorders
  • Phobias
  • Anger management
  • Grief and loss
  • Relationship issues
  • Substance use disorders
  • Eating disorders and food addictions
  • Domestic abuse or violence

While psychoeducational groups are helpful for many struggling with issues listed above, they are not generally recommended as a stand-alone treatment. However, as a part of a comprehensive IOP, psychoeducational groups offer significant benefits for individuals struggling with these problems.
