Individualized One-on-One Therapy

Mental health treatment frequently includes individual one-on-one therapy in addition to other treatment modalities that might be performed individually or in a group setting. Meeting privately with a clinician allows clients to explore issues in depth and find ways to manage symptoms that are precisely geared to their needs. The connection between the clinician and client, as well as the treatment modalities used during the therapy, can make all the difference in the success of an individual’s treatment program.

At Avalon Integrative Wellness, individual therapy is an essential component in our IOP. Our clients will have regular sessions with their designated therapist to work through problems in greater detail. In some cases, the goal of the therapy may be to eliminate the issue. Other times, treatment is used to effectively manage symptoms and reduce the impact of the problem or condition on the person’s life. Topics addressed might include previous trauma, grief, and loss, diagnosed mental health disorders, current challenges impacting daily life, or chronic illnesses that are affecting the client’s mental health.

What does Individual Therapy Treat?

Because individual therapy is highly personalized, it can be used to address a wide range of issues and concerns, including:

  • Anxiety disorders and phobias
  • Depression
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Acute and chronic stress
  • Eating disorders and food addictions
  • Insomnia and other sleep disorders
  • Relationship and family problems
  • Substance use disorders
  • Issues concerning sexuality

As a part of a comprehensive IOP, clients at Avalon Integrative Wellness will incorporate individual therapy with group therapy modalities as well as other treatments and services to provide holistic treatment that addresses issues and conditions on all possible levels. While individual therapy is a component in most IOPs, we carefully select the type of therapies that will offer the most significant benefit to the client, ensuring an optimal outcome from the full IOP experience.

Benefits of Individual Therapy in an IOP

The opportunity to work one-on-one with a clinician as a part of an IOP offers numerous benefits for our clients. Topics can be covered in these sessions that will not receive sufficient attention through other modalities. Individual therapy allows a client the opportunity to:

  • Discover useful coping strategies that offer a healthy approach to obstacles and challenges
  • Identify personal strengths at a time when the focus has previously been on weaknesses
  • Set goals and follow meaningful pursuits that impact your quality of life
  • Reset expectations to a realistic level and arrange life priorities to meet them

Individual therapy allows clients to share information without fear of judgment and unwanted advice. It is a safe place to open up about previous trauma and other issues that may be contributing to your current mental condition.

How it Works

The structure of an individual therapy session will depend in part on the type of treatment modality used. Some options utilized during these sessions include:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

This method focuses on identifying negative thoughts and behaviors and transforming them into positive ones. CBT is a modality of choice for numerous conditions, including anxiety, depression, eating disorders and bipolar disorder.

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)

This form of CBT features four essential components: mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance and interpersonal effectiveness. This therapy addresses multiple problems at one time, although the most pressing issues are usually dealt with initially. Clients learn through these sessions that changes are needed to achieve their goals.

Interpersonal Therapy (IPT)

This shortened version of treatment looks at interpersonal problems like role changes in your social or professional life, conflicts with friends or family members and unresolved grief. During sessions, clients learn to enhance their communication skills and their ability to express emotions in a healthy way. This modality is often an effective choice as a treatment for depression.

Psychodynamic Therapy

This form of treatment focuses on childhood experiences that may have led to inappropriate, repetitive thoughts and feelings. As self-awareness increases, clients learn to shift old patterns of thoughts and behaviors to take charge of their lives.
