Acupuncture

The health of your mind and the health of your body are closely intertwined. When your mental health is not at an optimal level, you may also suffer physical symptoms of chronic pain, tension and other symptoms without an identifiable cause. Because our goal at Avalon Integrative Wellness is to bring the mind, body, and spirit into balance and harmony, we offer treatments to address physical symptoms as a part of our intensive outpatient program or IOP. One of the therapies that bring our clients significant relief from chronic pain and other concerns is acupuncture.

This holistic treatment has been used in traditional Chinese medicine practices for centuries. The process involves placing needles in strategic areas of the body where they are designed to release the flow of energy or Qi throughout the body. When energy can move freely, the body can heal itself and improve function. As a result, the symptoms of illnesses like chronic pain can be effectively relieved without medication or surgical intervention.

What does Acupuncture Treat?

The results of acupuncture are due to the ability of the needles to release brain chemicals into the body that can positively influence its response to pain and stress. Acupuncture has also been found to be useful in relieving the symptoms of some mental health conditions, such as:

  • Major depressive disorder
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Substance abuse disorders
  • Post-traumatic stress syndrome (PTSD)
  • Sleep disorders

At Avalon Integrative Wellness, we may recommend acupuncture as a component of our IOP, which may entail a variety of treatment modalities to achieve the best possible outcomes for our patients. We also offer acupuncture as a stand-alone therapy as a part of our wellness services.

Benefits of Acupuncture in an IOP

Acupuncture is a well-researched alternative therapy that has shown number benefits to those looking for relief for physical discomfort as well as those struggling with a wide range of mental health conditions. The process stimulates the release of essential pain-reducing substances into the body, such as enkephalins and endorphins. These chemicals naturally relieve the body from discomfort caused by a variety of diseases and illnesses. At the same time, acupuncture has been found to balance the body’s hormones, leading to more robust immune function and countering the effects of persistent stress on the body.

How it Works

When our clients begin an acupuncture treatment at Avalon Integrative Wellness, they are first directed to get into a comfortable position on the treatment table. The clinician will insert the small needles into the appropriate locations, based on the precise concerns of the client. Once the needles are in place, they may be gently manipulated, or heat or electrical impulses may be added to enhance the results of the procedure further. The treatment is relatively comfortable and may last just a few minutes to up to one hour, depending on the recommendations of the clinician.
