Memory Problems and Anxiety: Everything You Need to Know

When anxiety hits, a number of symptoms may occur. You may feel your heart beating fast, your thoughts may be racing, your palms may be sweaty, and so much more. With all of this going on, how could you possibly focus on anything else? Anxiety is distressing, but another layer of stress (or even anxiety!) may be added if you later find that you can’t remember exactly what was going on around the time you were anxious (or perhaps you were anxious and didn’t even know it). All in all, anxiety can definitely affect your memory – so if you have anxiety and memory problems, you’re not alone.

There are 3 main ways that anxiety can affect your memory, either directly or indirectly:

  • Stress hormones– when anxiety levels rise, adrenaline is released, which also releases the stress hormone, cortisol. Essentially, your body is in “fight or flight” mode, and in working hard to respond to a threat or attack, it loses memory tracks that it may have otherwise had.
  • Overthinking– anxiety tends to involve a lot of this, and with a very active mind, it becomes more difficult to focus on the present moment long enough to create new, full memories. In a nutshell, your current thoughts are fighting for space with your memories – which explains a lot for why you may seem to be “missing” pieces of your life.
  • Losing sleep– with a lot of worries and fears rattling in your mind, you may find it difficult to sleep. All of that tossing and turning or staying awake can lead to a secondary impact of difficulty on your memory, as lost sleep does make it more difficult for the brain to develop and retrieve memories.

If you’re concerned about your memory (and your anxiety, of course), it’s time to begin your journey towards full healing and restoration. There are a variety of treatment options that can be used to help with this – such as medication, psychotherapy, meditation, acupuncture, and more – and you may certainly find that your memory improves over time. All in all, you are comprised of your mind, body, and spirit, and it’s important that you seek balance for all in order to achieve true happiness and well-being. Don’t wait any longer to start this beautiful journey.
