Is day treatment for depression effective?

Depression, sometimes medically referred to as clinical depression, is a significant mental health issue that impacts many people per year regardless of age, gender, race or socioeconomic status. Individuals experiencing depression struggle with extended durations in which their moods and mindsets are adversely affected.

Symptoms Of Depression

The physical and mental manifestations of depression may vary from case to case and depend upon the condition’s severity. That said, a medical or mental health professional might render a diagnosis of depression if a patient displays several of the following emotional, cognitive or physical symptoms for a period lasting at least two weeks:

Emotional Symptoms

  • Extreme and unrelenting sadness
  • Feelings of guilt or hopelessness
  • Suicidal tendencies
  • Irritability
  • Lack of enjoyment in participating in activities they used to regularly partake in
  • Overall pessimistic attitude

Cognitive Symptoms

  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Memory problems
  • Trouble making decisions
  • Trouble executing routine tasks

Physical Symptoms

  • Extreme tiredness
  • Sleeping difficulties
  • Change in appetite
  • Weight fluctuations
  • Bodily aches
  • Other manifestations that cannot be correlated to any specific illness

Treating Depression

How a mental health professional recommends treating depression depends upon several factors such as the patient’s age, overall health, the severity of their depression and potential risk factors to specific therapeutic protocols. One such form of treatment includes day treatment, often referred to as Intensive Outpatient Therapy (IOT).

Day Treatment Defined
This form of therapy, which is sometimes called partial hospitalization, enables a depressed individual to receive treatment at a facility that treats their condition without having to be admitted to the institution. Among the benefits of such an endeavor is the protocol allows patients to remain in their homes and still receive the help they need.

How Does Day Treatment Work?
Those participating in such a program spend several hours per day in a facility or clinic that offers such services. During this time, patients will partake in specific activities and receive counsel from various mental health professionals based upon their specific diagnosis. The goal of this treatment option is help depressed persons overcome their illness and return to leading a productive, happy life. These programs include a wide variety of services, often including integrated wellness approaches such as Positive Psychology and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS).

This therapeutic option is believed to be less stringent than other stricter forms of treatment like hospitalization in a hospital or mental health facility or admittance into an in-house treatment program. The duration one is expected to stay in outpatient treatment depends upon numerous variables. Most individuals will typically participate in these programs for a minimum of a few weeks as they learn to develop skills to cope with their depression.

Who Are Candidates For Day Treatment?
Intensive Outpatient Therapy is best suited for those not experiencing severe manifestations of depression that might result in issues like psychosis or in individuals considered to be suicide risks. Additionally, such treatment protocols are usually not recommended for persons who have partaken in more strict treatment like hospitalization.

How Effective Is This Treatment?
Treating depression and other mental health issues could involve much trial and error. Every patient brings a different personality and individual set of circumstances and what works for one patient may not be effective for the other.  Those who seek Intensive Outpatient Treatment, or day treatment, are generally recommended by an experienced therapist who feels this less intense program is an optimal fit.
