A person shared their story of living with anxiety and panic disorder via the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). Here is an excerpt from their story: “Over the next several months I dealt with extremely uncomfortable and terrifying sensations when traveling by car…Even the thought of getting into the car began to cause me excessive worry and physical sensations…I thought I was going crazy…”
Anxiety can cause so much distress and, while we may all have anxious bouts from time to time (such as when we’re about to go into an interview), anxiety can become all-encompassing and persistent if we don’t manage it effectively. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA), anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the United States – affecting about 40 million adults each year. Is anxiety controlling your life? Here are 5 ways to tell:
- You’re unable to do things you once enjoyed because of your anxiety.
- When you get an anxious thought, you tend to spiral.
- Your anxiety has manifested into physical symptoms such as shortness of breath, nausea, and more – sometimes even full-blown panic attacks.
- You miss out on opportunities because your anxiety talks you out of them.
- You worry about things for no reason.
When not treated, anxiety can take over our mind’s thinking patterns and develop into a mental illness. While treatable, it’s better to catch anxiety and treat it before it gets this far. However, if you have been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, know that recovery is possible – it may take some time and hard work, but you can find healing, growth, and ultimate transformation.
For many, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) provides an excellent framework for working with unruly thoughts; “take home” assignments and mindfulness-based practices can help individuals restore some of that cognitive functioning that has become impaired from anxiety. No longer will you have to endure the lengthy bouts of racing thoughts, dizziness, and impending doom alone – in your recovery, you will have a team of healthcare professionals right there to walk you through each and every step.
