Dialectical Behavioral Therapy for Borderline Personality Disorder: Effective Treatment

If you’ve been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (BPD), you may currently be searching for a reputable treatment center for the ultimate journey to recovery. A component of treatment that is essential to your healing involves individual psychotherapy, which allows you to speak one on one with a licensed therapist. Here, you will have the opportunity to delve into your past, present, and future, unlocking a variety of tools and techniques to help you work through any emotional turbulence that may cause you distress. One amazing approach with evidence of success, especially for those with BPD, is dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT).

Those with BPD often experience “black-and-white” thinking, also described as “all-or-nothing” thinking. With this, extremes can take place, such as:

  • “I didn’t pass this test, therefore I’m a failure.”
  • “They didn’t text me back, so they must not like me.”
  • “Things are never going to get better.”
  • “Nothing ever goes right for me.”

More often than not, we’re prone to negative thinking – which causes those with BPD to focus on what isn’t working more often that what is going well. DBT seeks to address this by helping change the above thought patterns into more productive ones, such as:

  • “I didn’t pass this test, but that’s okay. More opportunities will come my way.”
  • “They didn’t text me back, but they’re probably busy.”
  • “Things aren’t that great right now, but I know they’ll get better.”
  • “Things just aren’t going right for me today, but I will do what I can to turn things around.”

A 2017 review published in the Indian Journal of Psychological Medicine stated that for those with BPD in particular, DBT can help: 1) reduce suicidal thoughts, 2) treat issues related to past trauma, 3) develop self-esteem, and 4) develop the capacity for optimum experience and ultimately, find a higher purpose. While this approach to therapy may feel uncomfortable, it’s meant to feel that way – it’s a new way of thinking, which can take time and practice. Don’t give up, and you will find yourself much better able to cope with negative thoughts and feelings.
